Flying Must Haves

by FaceDoctorette on December 14, 2009

planeAs I was sitting on a tarmac in Philadelphia trying desperately to get to New York to see all the pretty lights, I was informed that I would be sitting on the plane for another hour (Yes, I had been sitting there for an hour already and there was no take off time in sight).  Considering I had reached my mental capacity for the day after reading a corporate finance book for about 6 hours, I thought I would write a post about my essential must-haves when flying.

I am no fan of flying.  It used to not bother me at all but these days you will find me doing breathing exercises with my eyes closed while praying to God that the plane won’t go down.  I have not yet mastered how to get over my fear of dying – I mean flying – but luckily I have picked up a few tips over the years that allow me to be prepared for all circumstances (Like being forced to sit on a runway for upwards of 2 hours).

Every time I fly I always have the following items:

Water, water and more water – Flying causes you to be dehydrated, which effects your complexion, but drinking lots of water while flying can keep you looking fresh! I have also heard that it’s a good idea to spritz your face with water but who has extra room in their bag for a spray bottle? Seriously.

Hand sanitizer – I may even use this a little too much and therefore need lotion as well.

iPod and earphones – Even if you don’t have an iPod it is still a good idea to take a pair of earphones to pop in your ears just in case the person sitting beside you refuses to let you work/read/watch a movie/relax.

Eye mask – I only take a mask on long flights but I cannot sleep without one. Especially if the person next to me keeps their light on.

Book – Even if I don’t plan on reading the whole time I always have a book. It allows me to keep my mind occupied while electronic devices must remain in the off position.

Snacks – I always have a few snacks in case I get plane sick or hungry.  Not only do I get to eat what I want but also my snacks are typically cheaper than the $5 pack of nuts on planes.

Socks – I always try and wear socks because a) I don’t like to be barefoot while walking through security and b) It is usually really cold on flights so wearing socks always keeps me warm and toasty.

Phone charger – You never know when you will be stranded somewhere so it is always good to have an extra charger with you and not in your checked luggage.

Well there you have it. My flying must haves minus the things that are always must haves such as lip-gloss, gum, cash, Kleenex, etc.

What are your flying must haves? Is there anything you always take on a plane that is not listed above?

    Great post Chevis!

I agree with all your suggestions except water… I try to avoid it as much as possible because it seems like my blatter shrinks when I fly. I think it may be my nerves or something. I would also add bringing a movie. A lot of the times, I dont like what they airline is showing but I do like the distraction of a movie.
