Sweet Dreams: Melatonin and Mary Green

by FaceDoctorette on October 29, 2009

Holly GolightlyI am a strong believer in getting at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Not only does a good nights sleep keep you from coming off your rocker for lack of it, but it also keeps your skin glowing and helps prevent your body from gaining weight (I will have to ask my dad why exactly this is the case). In order to get a good nights sleep, I have a little ritual I go through every night when I get into bed. This ritual consists of putting on my sleep mask (Mary Green makes my favorite sleep masks), lathering my lips with Neosporin’s overnight renewal therapy and a little pill that goes by the name of melatonin.

According to Wikipedia, the primary motivation for the use of melatonin may be as a natural aid to better sleep. Incidental benefits to health and well-being may accumulate, due to melatonin’s role as an antioxidant and its stimulation of the immune system and several components of the endocrine system.

What I have found with melatonin is that I can only take 1 mg, because if I take any more than that I have some pretty crazy dreams, which actually results in a lack of sleep. If I don’t take it though, then I will never fall asleep. You can buy melatonin at your local corner store, also known as Walgreens, for$6.99 and most of the time it’s buy one get one free!

Oh and by the way, Mary Green makes the CUTEST Breakfast at Tiffany’s sleep mask. It is a must have for any Holly Golightly fans!

What are your bedtime rituals? For those of you that have tried using melatonin already, did you have crazy dreams too?

When I lived in the Virgin Islands, I used Melatonin EVERY night to fall asleep. But, I don't remember having crazy dreams every time I used it. However, when I tried NOT to use it, I was convinced I couldn't fall asleep…. after I got home from the VIs, I decided no more melatonin! I may use it once every few months, but now I can fall asleep without anything.

In one of my psychology classes, we talked about people that would have trouble falling asleep. One of the famous psychologists (I forget his name but will look it up) told his client do things to make him stay awake, and before he knew it, the client was falling asleep on a regular schedule, because instead of thinking about falling asleep, he tried to stay awake (like cleaning, laundry, something!). Everyone needs to sleep and will fall asleep by themselves, they just need a little convincing.. try it Chev! Do something in your apartment to STAY awake, and before you know it your bed will be calling your name!!!!!!!!!! :)

    I am loving your posts!

Me too. I sleep with a simple silk one every night, but the Breakfast at Tiffany's mask is most definitely on my Christmas list!

Thanks Rachel! I will have to ask Peggy about this psychologist you speak of. I was thinking it may not be great to take every night but when researching melatonin for this post, it is supposedly good for your immune system because of the antioxidants. I don't know. I will have to try your theory tonight, but if I am still awake at midnight I am going to have to take my pill ;-)

I think adults have the same needs as kids on this one: a bedtime ritual works wonders. Having that routine you do each night before bed to get your body ready for sleep is a great idea. For my nieces it's a book and a bottle :)

I had not even thought about it that way, but you are so right! I used to drink chamomille tea at night as part of my ritual as well but I have quit doing that. I am not sure why, but I may start doing it again with the cold months on the way. It is very soothing and makes me feel cozy and safe for some reason (I know, I sound crazy).

It's so important to have rituals for kids like you said. I remember when I was younger my routine would consist of Ramona the Pest and books and me begging my mom to take out my bow!
